Aliens and Astronauts (5 mins)

Organization:

30 x 30

One ball per alien.

Instructions:

-Aliens and Astronauts. Aliens (blue) will "shoot" the ball at the Astronauts (white) using correct shooting technique.

-If an astronaut is hit below the knees with a ball, he quickly gets a ball and becomes an alien.

-Last astronaut standing wins.

Coaching Points:

Shoot with laces

Plant foot next to ball and aiming towards target (partner)

Land on shooting foot

Arm out for balance

Progressions:

Make the area smaller

Warm up- Passing (10 mins)

Organization: - Establish a 5-yard open space between the paired players. Each pair needs 1 soccer ball.

Instructions: - Players pass the ball to each other ensuring it does not stop in the dead zone.

-Players compete to see how many consecutive passes they can complete in a 2-minute period

Coaching Points:

(1). Angle of approach – center.

(2). Supporting foot is next to the ball pointed at target.

(3). Contact ball - middle.

(4). Contact foot - inside.

(5). Ankle locked with toe pointed up.

(6). Follow through towards target with striking foot remaining open throughout.

Progressions: (1). Use both feet. Keep the ball moving and don't let it stop in the dead zone. (2). Keep ball moving by pushing the ball across the body or to the side of the body so the ball doesn't stop. (3). Have the players use the "weak" foot only to increase accuracy and familiarity.

Passing: Balls across the bridge (10 mins)

Organization: 40 x 40 yd area.

-7 gates- 2 yd wide.

- Players in pairs.

Instructions: Passing through the bridge with inside of the foot only. Ball must be passed on the bridge between partners. Each pair passes on the same bridge and count how many passes in a row between cones. Do not let your ball fly off the bridge and drown in the river.

Coaching Points:

(1). Foot beside the ball

(2). Head is looking in the direction of the pass.

(3). Angle of approach – center

(4). Contact ball - middle

(5). Ankle locked with toe pointed up

(6). Follow through towards target with striking foot remaining open throughout

Progressions: (1). Each pair has 1 bridge and pass through the gate without hitting railings (cones) as many times in a row for 2 minutes. (2). Now, partners count how many bridges their ball crossed and can NOT use the same bridge twice or else will have to pay a toll (-1 bridge). (4). Ball crosses as many bridges without touching the railings. If your ball goes off of the bridge when you pass, you are OUT. Last team standing wins!

Angry Birds (15 mins)

Organization:

1. Line of 3 cones 10yds apart

2. 2 players with 2 soccer balls

3. 1 ball is placed in the center on top of the cone

4. 2nd ball starts with player on the side

Instructions:

1. 2 players will play against each other and try to knock the ball off the center cone with a pass.

2. Player 1 will start the game and try first. If the player knocks the ball off, he gets a point.

3. Then the player places the ball back on the center cone and player 2 attempts.

4. Play for 2 minutes. Make it Tournament style: Player who won moves up a game towards the top; and player who lost moves down a game)

Coaching Points:

1. Non-kicking foot placed on the side of the ball pointing at the target

2. Head up observe target

3. Working on inside-push pass: use iside surface of kicking foot, heel down, toe up

4. Strike through the middle of the ball

5. Follow through the pass to target with passing foot

6. Weight and accuracy of Pass

Progressions:

P1- Create a longer distance to pass

P2- Force players to take a first touch into space before passing

Tournament 3v3 (20 mins)

Organization:

3v3 Small-sided tournament games: 4 teams of 3 players eachteam. 2 fields of 20x30 yards with 2 Pugg Goals on opposite endlines. Play small sided to larger goals if possible since the kids got striking repitiions during the session.

Instructions:

4 Teams of 3, play 3v3 tournament style format where each team will play one another. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 for a loss. Each game should be approximately 6-8 minutes in duration (obviously play a 3 game tournament).

Coaching Points:

· Review of session's learning outcomes being translated into the game

· 3 lines of attack

· Creating triangle (gives angles of support)

· Making triangle as big as possible (Creating space)
