1 vs. 1 Warm UP (10 mins)

1. The objective is to provide a dynamic warm up using the two techniques (block save & smother/dive) within a controlled activity. Only a low level of decision making is required, allowing the focus to be on technique

a) The three players are positioned on each cone and effectively play a passing drill to each other. the ball does not have to passed in sequence, meaning the direction of the pass is less predictable for the GK.

b) The GK starts in the centre of the triangle, but once the first pass has been made the GK moves to make the most effective 1 vs. 1 save depending on which player has the ball

c) The number of touches taken by the players can be varied (no more than two touch) to encourage different saving techniques from the GK (block or smother/dive)

Learning Objectives

Technical
Technical
Develop execution of technique, appropriate footwork and recovery for secondary saves
Technical
Tactical
Develop decision making based on movt. of ball and players, & positioning of players
Technical
Physical
Emphasis on speed over short distances (in relation to decisions made)
Technical
Psychological
Develop assertive, aggressive & 'body on the line' mindset. Ability to remain next tasks focused
Technical
Social

Functional 1vs. 1 (a) (15 mins)

1. The objective is to develop decision making based on the movt. of the ball, attacker & defender, along with execution of technique.

2. The skillset required will include getting into line, trevelling down the line with effective footwork, block saves, smother/dive saves & possibly secondary saves

a) The attacker starts on the pole as indicated. The defender starts on the cone as indicated

b) The server passes the ball to the attacker, behind the pole as indicated. The defender MUST wait at the cone until the attacker's 1st touch

c) Once they have received the pass, the attacker dribbles the ball toward goal - they can decide to shoot or try to go around the GK. If both options are not being taken, the coach should stipulate that the attacker must try both things.

d) The defender chases the attacker as soon as they have taken their 1st touch. they should try and prevent the goal - this ensures game pace realism and realistic defensive movt.

e) Alternate to work both the left & right side of the pitch

nb. The 'keeper should start in position for a long range shot from the server and adjust into line and down the line (indicated by the yellow double headed arrow) as appropriate based on the movt. of the ball & the players

1. The objective is to develop decision making based on the movt. of the ball, attacker & defender, along with execution of technique.

a) The attacker starts on the pole as indicated. The defender starts on the cone as indicated

b) The server passes the ball to the attacker, goalside of the pole as indicated. The defender MUST wait at the cone until the attacker's 1st touch

c) Once they have received the pass, the attacker dribbles the ball toward goal - they can decide to shoot or try to go around the GK. If both options are not being taken, the coach should stipulate that the attacker must try both things.

The GK may also be able to beat the attacker to the ball through quick, effective decision making (most likely using the smother/dive technique)

Functional 1vs. 1 (c) (20 mins)

The defender starts on the cone as indicated

b) The server passes the ball to the attacker, either goalside of or behind the pole as indicated. The defender MUST wait at the cone until the attacker's 1st touch. This requires the GK to wait & move accordingly based on passing variations

c) Once they have received the pass, the attacker dribbles the ball toward goal - they can decide to shoot or try to go around the GK. If both options are not being taken, the coach should stipulate that the attacker must try both things.

d) The defender chases the attacker as soon as they have taken their 1st touch. they should try and prevent the goal - this ensures game pace realism and realistic defensive movt.

The GK may also be able to beat the attacker to the ball through quick, effective decision making (most likely using the smother/dive technique). If the GK begins anticipating the pass, & moves early, the server can also shoot from long range to catch them out
