Theme: Defending in midfield
Principles: (1) compactness (2) pressure (3) control & restraint
Key Words/Phrase:
(1) Press - move towards the ball carried to apply pressure and force them to focus on the ball, try to win the ball or cause an error
(2) Get together - be compact with team, in a unit, or in a pair; close enough together that opposition cannot play between players3
(3) Go together - if one player moves forward to pressure the ball carrier can the entire team move together to prevent gaps from opening behind the player pressuring the ball carrier
(4) Screen - be aware of players behind you and try to eliminate passing angles of the ball carrier directly to the player being screened out
(5) Higher / Lower - move players forwards or backwards on the field, especially their starting position; higher closer to opposition goal and lower closer to own goal
Guided Questions:
(1) Where do we want the ball to go?
(2) How close should a player be to pressure the ball?
(3) How close should I be to the player pressuring the ball? What would impact my positioning?
(4) What does my body shape look like when I am anticipating a pass / trying to incept a pass?
(5) Where should I play when I win the ball?
Open ended questions to create thought in players
Key Points:
(1) two responsibilities, press players mark, and screen out player directly behind
(2) compact width - each player side by side compact to not allow passes between but far enough apart to allowing pressing or intercepting of a pass
(3) force / direct play one direction - the first defender should use their body to force the ball carrier in a direction, this will help all the defenders behind the player pressuring the ball anticipate where the ball will arrive next
Learning Outcomes:
(1) get behind the ball when possession is lost
(2) get compact in defensive organization
(3) to press as a team and remain compact in defensive organization
(4) how to force opposition in less dangerous areas
(5) identify opportunities to win possession / areas to create opportunities to win the ball
(6) body shape to set-up winning the ball back
(7) What do with the ball when it is won in zone 2 & 3
